Here are some useful tips if you buy a vehicle from an individual or sell a vehicle.
You should have your title in hand before attempting to sell a vehicle. If you cannot locate your title you must file for a duplicate title before you sell your vehicle.
If someone wants to test drive your vehicle, make sure they have a valid driver’s license.
Every owner on the title must sign off the title in front of a Notary.
Take your license plates off the car before giving the car to the buyer.
Keep a written record of the sale.
As a buyer you have 40 days from the sale date to transfer vehicle ownership. This is done by applying for the title and registering the vehicle at the county treasurer’s office in the buyer’s county of residence.
It is state law that vehicle owners must have motor vehicle liability insurance. If you have a loan on the vehicle, you will most likely be required to have additional insurance coverage, so speak with your lender.
If you need a form for any of the sale of your vehicle, they are free of charge and can be found at www.dojmt.gov/driving/vehicle-title-registration-forms
